4 hour Workshop - Medical Interpreting in ASL

Featuring
Dr. Michael McKee, MD, MPH/U of R Medical Center
Nationally Recognized Medical Care Provider to the Deaf Community

ASL Interpreter Workshop will be delivered in ASL and in spoken English.
Advanced knowledge and experience recommended. Participants will be asked to discuss and role-play certain scenarios throughout the 4 hour session.

Medical Interpreting for Deaf American Sign Language Users
Deaf American Sign Language (ASL) users, with the combination of communication and language barriers, are at high risk for poor health communication.  This population suffers a variety of health disparities.  Medical interpreting in ASL can help effectively reduce both communication and language barriers, allowing Deaf individuals to receive equal access to good health care.  Participants will learn about the existing communication and language barriers in the health care system, characteristics and peculiarities of difficult interpreter situations, and effective interpreter strategies to overcome any potential challenging encounters.

Real life stories and scenarios will be used as examples to help facilitate the interpreter workshop.  The workshop will be interactive.  A variety of medical signs will also be reviewed.

PRESENTER:
Michael M. McKee, MD, MPHentativeMichael M. McKee, MD, MPH
Dr. McKee is an assistant professor at the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Rochester.  He also works as a family medicine physician at the Folsom Family Medicine under Lifetime Health.  He cares for more than 800 Deaf patients and their families at this clinic.

His clinical research focuses on health literacy and health communication among Deaf American Sign Language users.  He is particularly interested in learning the effects of poor health communication on health care including cardiovascular risk factors to identify better communication strategies and tools when interacting with Deaf ASL users.

Dr. McKee received a K01 Award (2010-2015) through the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to study the effects of health literacy on cardiovascular risk factors for Deaf American Sign Language users.  As part of this research, he is developing a new health literacy instrument that is accessible for this population.  Dr. McKee also works closely the National Center for Deaf Health Research, a Center for Disease Control (CDC) funded Rochester Prevention Research Center. He is involved with the Deaf Health Community Committee and the Task Force on Health Care Careers for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community.  He also provides monthly “Deaf Health Talks,” a community health educational program available for the Deaf community.
