Heyssel Markwordt
I came to work at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in 2003 as a Management Assistant in a clinical setting where although there was already an Interpreters Service Program in place for our patients; there seem to be an increasing need for more.
I saw a couple of opportunities in the dilemma. First I could be of service to my community and second I would be able to practice my native language.
I took and passed the language proficiency test provided by the Department of Interpreter Services, which qualified me to interpret in Spanish as a Medical Interpreter in a hospital environment.
I have since worked extensive hours with a diverse group of patients in various settings including clinical, group meets, conferences and community fairs; I have also worked on translation of documents from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
I have now after working with the Medical Center as a Dual Role Interpreter for 9 years, finally decided to take the Court Interpreter Certificate Program administered by UCLA. My hope is to be of continued service to my community and to learn from the ambassadors of my language as I meet them on my journey.
