Dear prospective or current member,

Join us in advocating for professional medical interpreting services!

Whether you are currently a working medical interpreter or a hospital considering setting up an Interpreter Service Department, you will find the International Medical Interpreter Association to be a clearinghouse of information and all that you would expect from a world-class association. At the forefront in the advancement of professional medical interpreters and linguistic access for all patients, our organization gives you the opportunity to learn about one of the most altruistic careers while benefiting from networking with our state, national, and international members about important issues facing our profession. Our stature is augmented by the international experience and multicultural expertise of the accomplished members who are renown experts and pioneers in the field of medical interpreting and intercultural communication.

The primary benefit of joining a professional association is representation. There are many language access advocate organizations that are 501c3 organizations, considered charity organizations which rely on funding from grants and represent the interest of the public, or underserved populations, such as the patients we see. They report to their funders, which includes any organization that donates them grants. Our organization is a trade organization that represents the interests of working professional interpreters and is not funded by anyone other than its members.  We basically only report to our members.

The added benefits of joining the association include e-news briefs, a general assembly and regional meetings several times a year, notices of job and training opportunities, and an annual conference held in October that is known to be ‘the’ conference on medical interpreting. In 2008 the conference will be in Boston on October 10-12 and will focus on standards, regulations and language access laws that are already in place. We invite international interpreting experts to come to Boston in the Fall.

Our corporate members are given access to the most Comprehensive Interpreter Registry available online, searchable by language, state, or name. These members can also post job and training opportunities to targeted language groups. Our activities will provide ideal professional development for the many cultural and intellectual demands of your working medical interpreters. As an individual member, you benefit from these notices and can be assured that you will be informed of all the developments in your field. We also have other groups, such as providers and trainers and language access administrators that support the work of the association.

Large enough to give members a wide range of experiences, with over 1,500 members, our association is yet small enough to accommodate the special needs of a highly diverse and mobile interpreter membership. I ask that you take advantage of all the organization has to offer, and I also ask that you share with us your talents and passion, as this organization is moved by its members, each caring equal weight. Choose the IMIA as your main forum for medical interpreting and discover everything medical interpreting can become.

> 2008 IMIA ELECTIONS

A. Who is eligible to vote? All IMIA active members

B. Who is up for elections? All board positions. (see list below with respective job descriptions) This includes the Committee Chairs for all Committees listed on our committee webpage at http://www.imiaweb.org/members/committees.asp

C. What is the term of the positions? All Board members are elected for a period of two years (see IMIA bylaws)

D. What will be the process? All active members are allowed to run for any office. (inclusiveness). Nominations: Members who want to participate in the process will send the IMIA a statement of no more than 200 words stating:

1. Your name, state, and what position you are running for
2. Why members should vote for you for this position
3. What your qualifications are for the position
4. What you are going to do for the organization in the next two years.

> IMIA GUIDE TO TELEPHONE INTERPRETING

A Medical Interpreter’s Guide to Telephone Interpreting is the first in a series of guides to be published by the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA). > STUDY ON LANGUAGE DISPARITIES

An article from the American Journal of Manged Care entitled "Language Disparities and Timely Care for Children in managed Care Medicaid was jpublished. It is an interesting article describing a study of  the relationship between language of parents (among the variables) and timeliness of care. Done in WA state, it reiterates the importance of parent ability to communicate and outcome for care for children and identifies that the use of an interpreter results in more timely access. Thank you to Brunilda Torres for helping us post this.

> IMIA NATIONAL INTERPRETER REGISTRY

The IMIA is proud to have the only national registry of medical interpreters in the US. It includes about 1,600 interpreters in over 60 languages, and each profile includes  training, general education, work experience, references, and even their resume, if they wish to upload it. It is of great use to our corporate members who rely on it to search interpreters, and also for our interpreters who get work by being identified in this registry.  Please help us promote this registry by letting interpreters know that they can join the registry when they join the organization. A registry is only as good as it's size and search capabilities.
