Brief description:
This course reviews the standardized skills and tools for bilingual professionals to work as professional medical interpreters in the healthcare setting. It also provides an opportunity for interpreters and translators, seeking to advance their continuing education and professional development. This training uses the the Standards on Interpreter Training by The National Council on Interpretation in Healthcare.
Topics covered: The Roles of the interpreter National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice Interpreting Techniques Overview of the Healthcare System and how it has evolved in the US The Culture of Western Biomedicine An overview of anatomy and physiology An in depth look at different Cultures and their Impact on the Health Care Encounter Traditional Healing Practices The Dynamics of Communication Communication Skills for Occasional Advocacy How to Advocate Appropriately Professional Development Therapeutic Boundaries
Training will include role play drills during classes used as additional assessment of the proficiency of the student throughout the course.
