Medical Interpreting Skills

Target audience:
Bilingual staff and volunteers working with health providers who need to brush up on their skills in interpreting in the medical field by expanding their medical terminology vocabulary.
Requirements:
 Oral fluency in English and native/near-native fluency in Spanish or instructor approval. Knowledge and work experience in the the healthcare industry preferred.

Brief description:
This course will address the attitudinal differences between the Latino and Anglo-American cultures and how the affect healthcare decisions. It will increase vocabulary needed to interpret for Spanish-speaking patients by using vocabulary related to illness and symptoms, necessary medical language, and cultural cues.

 This program incorporates competency skills in: medical terminology, culture, and delivery of health care; and interpreting in the healthcare field. A 15-hour practicum is required at an authorized healthcare facility under the supervision of a trained interpreter.
