Target audience:
Bilingual individuals who seek a career in healthcare translation and interpreting, and who want to prepare for the national certification exam for healthcare interpreters.
Brief description:
This is a 12 credit hour program consisting of four online classes (45 hours per course), which may be completed in one year, or taken one course at a time over a two-year period. Available for bilinguals in French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, or Spanish.

Out-of-State students may take these courses at In-State rates through membership in the Tennessee Association of Professional Interpreters and Translators (TAPIT). In addition to the admission requirements of ETSU’s School of Graduate Studies (please go to http://www.etsu.edu/gradstud/admissions.asp for more information), the following is required for admission to the Graduate Certificate Program in Health Care Translation and Interpreting: * Submit an application to the School of Graduate Studies along with an essay of 150-300 words describing the applicant’s reasons for pursuing the certificate program. * Pass a telephonic Speaking and Listening Assessment in two languages at the Advanced Level through ALTA Language Services. The test can be scheduled by filling out a Language Testing form on their website (www.altalang.com/language-testing) Each applicant must pass two assessments at the Advanced Level, one in English and one in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish. When you sign up for the tests, be sure to indicate ETSU as the agency to whom your results are to be sent.
