Brief description:
THE LANGUAGE OF JUSTICE is a three-day training that supports community and medical interpreters who perform legal interpreting in hospitals or for attorneys, nonprofit agencies and government services. Medical and community interpreters need guidance on how to perform effective legal interpreting in community settings. In the U.S., legal interpreting is not the same profession as community interpreting. Legal interpreting has different ethics, skills and standards of practice. Even experienced legal interpreters may need guidance on the appropriate standards of practice for non-courtroom legal interpreting in collaborative and/or community settings. They may be unfamiliar with an attorney’s ethics, expectations and requirements. The 125-page raining manual was authored by four experts across the country, including two attorneys and specialists in legal and community interpreting. A 62-workbook is also included. The curriculum includes an overview of the legal interpreting profession, requirements and procedures, a model code of ethics and standards of practice, linguistic mediation techniques, legal terminology and an overview of the U.S. legal system. The training is delivered by two superbly qualified federal- and state-court certified veteran interpreters, James Plunkett and Marta Goldstein. They are raters for the federal and state certification exams and provide court interpreter training for the D.C. Superior Court and Maryland Administrative Office of the Courts, respectively. They are accompanied by an attorney specialized in legal interpreting, Irfana Anwer, Esq. or Jean Bruggeman, Esq.
