Program in Translation & Interpreting, 160 McNamara Alumni Center, University of Minnesota, 200 Oak Street S.E., Minneapolis, MN 55455. Courses meet on Minneapolis campus and off-campus locations, including other cities in Minnesota, depending on demand.
Target audience:
Working interpreters and other highly bilingual individuals. Some courses require proficiency in particular language pairs; some are open to speakers of any language along with English.
Brief description:
University-level training for community interpreters. A Certificate in Interpreting is offered with Health Care or Legal specializations upon completion of 6 semester courses: Intro to Translation, Intro to Interpreting, Consecutive Interpreting, and an elective, plus EITHER Healthcare Terms and Concepts for Interpreters and Interpreting in Health Care OR Legal Terms and Concepts for Interpreters and Interpreting in Legal Settings. Content includes interpreter protocols, ethical issues, specialized language, process management, and building interpreting skills through bilingual practice in three modes. Some courses are available at remote sites via Interactive Television (ITV).
